Changing Your View

Over the life of your business, you will likely change the location of your operations. There are certain steps to follow to ensure people find you.

First, make sure you file a Change of Address with the United States Postal Service at USPS.com. We recently did this and found the effort to be simple and quick. You will want to choose your new location as Permanent and pick the appropriate date to begin forwarding your mail. There is $1.25 identity verification fee so have your credit or debit card handy.

Second, It is important to note that you need to change your address on critical individual accounts or sites as well, such as banking, utilities, credit cards, etc. Certain banks may require you to visit them in person to change your business address while others permit this online or over the phone. Be sure to contact your Insurance Agent, especially if you have to provide Certificates of Insurance for work projects. Usually, an email to your Agent with the new location and effective date completes this task. If you do have outstanding COIs with clients, you likely need to update those. And if you have an attorney, check with them about your responsibility to update your state and Federal Tax-ID filing address.

And last but not least, be sure to post your relocation on your social media sites. If in person visits are part of your normal client routine, this effort should be accomplished sooner than later. Have fun with it and use tantalizing GIFs or engaging photos of your new space, if appropriate. Using your logo to highlight the move is also an effective option to garner some likes and activity on your pages.

When you choose to have a different view from your desk, make sure you alert professional colleagues, circle of trust advisors, clients, and followers. Even in a digital workspace, it is important to stay connected from your new vantage point.

Be well.
